Domain Name Regulations for Registration

General Rules That Apply To All Domains

• Must be made up of letters(a-z), numbers(0-9) or hyphen(-)
• Must be between 2 & 63 characters in length
• Words can be seperated with a hyphen, but hyphens are not allowed at the beginning or end nor can you have 2 in a row
• Spaces and special characters are not allowed

Specific Rules Depending on Domain Type

.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .tv or .cc Domains

Anyone can register these domains as there are no eligiblity requirements.

.com.au or .net.au Domains

Usually for commercial purposes.

To be eligible:

• You must be an Australian registered entity (e.g. company, partnership, sole trader, business, etc) with either an ABN, ACN, Registered State Business Number or Trademark holder.
• The domain name must either be an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the entity's name, or it must be closely and substantially connected to the name or nature of the operations (e.g. product names, industry/sector names, etc.)

.org.au or .asn.au Domains

Used by associations or non-commercial organizations.

To be eligible:

• You must be a 'non-commercial' organization (e.g. charity, not-for-profit organization or club)
• The domain name must either be an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the entity's name, or it must be closely and substantially connected to the name or nature of the organization.

.id.au Domains

Used by individuals.

To be eligible:

• You must be an Australian citizen

.mobi Domains

Used to indicate that a site is compatible with mobile devices (e.g. mobile phones, PDA's, etc.).

To be eligible:

• There are no eligibility requirements to register a .mobi domain name. However, .mobi websites must be compliant with .mobi registry guidelines to ensure they display correctly on mobile devices.

.co.nz or .net.nz Domains

These domains are generally used to indicate a New Zealand based business.

To be eligible:

• Anyone is eligble to register these domain names, you DO NOT need to be a New Zealand company to do so.

.asia Domains

To be eligible:

• You must be a legal entity within the Pan-Asia and Asia-Pacific region (defined by ICANN as Asia/Australia/Pacific region)
